Groups of students were given a list of items from which to choose
and rank to enable them to survive on a desert island or the moon or a abandoned
building.

It is the Desert Island Simulation and did not involve any computer or software.
The teacher put us in a circle and presented a scenerio that the group has made a
decision to leave the small island they are stranded on and get to the larger
island they can see 40 miles in the distance. They only have two weeks of water and
one week of food. They have 16 palm trees, 50 truck tires, balloons, crates,
clothes and contents of packets. We were asked to plan out our strategy for getting
to the bigger island. We didn't know the teacher had planted two ringers -
individuals who were supposed to be contrary and belligerant.
The wrap up discussion involved questions about how we felt about the simulation.
All the questions asked about group goals, how we treated one another, empathy,
support, paraphrasing, positiveness, approval, and questioning. We identified
leaders and others who exhibited the above qualities.
